Injectable mods of Diabetes Flashcards
What the best way to use injectable insulin?
50% basal - small, steady insulin release
50% bolus - pulse to use after meal
How do insulin pump devices work?
Continuous subcutaneous Insulin Infussion (CSII)
use Rapid Acting Insulin
Basal settings - units/hr
bolus - insulin: carb ratio
what are downsides to insulin pump devices
continuous blood monitor by fingerstick (FSBG)
change infusion sites 2-3 days
costs money
What is a problem in pancreas islet cell transplantation?
quick rejection
needs alot of cells for successful transplant
What is amylin?
peptide that is secreted along with insulin at a 100:1 ratio
-marker for B cell dysfunction in type 2 diabetes
What role does amylin play?
glycemic regulation:
- slows gastric emptying
- injected with each meal
- better glucose control when combo’d with insulin
What are pros and cons of GLP-1
stimulate insulin secretion, decrease glucagon
pros: lower glucose + weight loss
cons: C-cell hyperplasia in thryoid cells (except Exanatide)
LEADER study = cardiovascular benefit
What are 3 cardioprotective drugs used in diabetes?
- Metformin
- Lorangatide
- Piaglitaflozin
