Explain the term Freeze.
To stop movements in and out of a scene, and prevent any contamination or loss of evidence.
Explain the term Control.
Maintain control of the scene by controlling witness/victim and suspects movements.
Explain the term Preserve.
Prevent the loss or further loss of evidentally important items.
What are the duties of a Scene Guard?
UNBENT
- Unauthorised Entry
- Notebooke taking
- Brief authorised people
- Explore and report suspicious activity
- No contamination by yourself
- Think of animals

The scene guard are responsible for freeze/control/preserve the scene
What is included in a SITREP?
(Situation Report)
- Information to help locate offender.
- Advise what assistance is needed.
- how long you’ll be at job
- Provide the location of SFP to staff who are on their way to the incident
Keep comms up informed of any changes at scene and any action required.
What information must you know before becoming a Scene Guard?
6W - 1S
- Who is authorised to enter the scene?
- Where are the scene boundaries?
- Where is the designated point of entry?
- What route might authorised personel take through the scene?
- Where is the point of exit
- What happened at the scene?
- Are there any suspects? - Get info/photos
What is a common approach path?
Consider a path into and out of a scene for all movments. A route that avoids destroying evidence, and avoids routes taken by suspects.
What are the 8 steps of systematic approach to investigation?
- Victim / Informant - Particulars / detail incident.
- Appreciation - AFCOP.
- Witness - Particulars / Considerations.
- Scene - Indentify/Exam Scene / Freeze Control Preserve.
- Exhibits - Preserve evidence / CCTV Phone Camera
- Elements - Identify what offence / All elements satisfied.
- Powers - What are your powers / Assistance needed.
- Offender / Suspect - Decide on action / Gain information.

Initially ask open ended questions to gain the most information.
e.g

What are the 5W + H questions?

These are probing questions.
Stages for enroute onto a scene?
- Obtain description of suspect, vehicle, vehicle direction, weapons.
- Watch vehicles entering/ leaving the scene
- Designate SFP (Safe Forward Point)
- Discuss responsibilites
What do you ask the informer at the scene of incident?
- Identify offender and victim. Direction of offender.
- Update Comms
- Ask informant location of scene
- Remain at the scene
What are the two factors to consider when setting a scene boundary?
- Think BIG.
- Remember area where offender approach, entered and left the scene.
What must you do when attending a sudden death and your first on scene?
- Check victim pulse, warmth of skin. If possible not dead administer CPR
- Contact AMBOS
- Check clothing
- Don’t move body
- Note what you see
- Sketch scene
What does appreciation refer to?
Taking time to asses the situation what you will need to do and how you will do it.
