Inherited Variations Flashcards
What to offspring inherit off of their parents?
Some of their parents characteristics.
Different characteristics are called?
Variations.
What are an organisms characteristics controlled by?
It’s genetic information carried by genes.
What are genes?
Sections of chromosomes which are found in the nucleus of almost all organisms cells.
What fuses during sexual reproduction?
Two gametes (sex cells), one male and one female.
Is animals, what gametes fuse to make a fertilised egg?
The male sperm cell and the female ovum (egg cell).
The fertilised egg splits into two during the process of cell division to form what?
An embryo.
The cells of the embryo divide to form a ball of cells which grows into what?
A new organism.
Why are both the mothers and the fathers characteristics seen in offspring?
This is because the fertilised egg has half the mother’ genetic information and half the father’s genetic info.
How are identical twins born?
The fertilised egg splits into two and two embryos form.
What are an organisms features called?
Characteristics.
