A
Often referred to as relative analgesia or RA
- 20-25% Nitrous oxide produces sedation, very safe in concentrations used in the surgery
- cleared from blood stream in 5 mins of breathing normal air
- analgesia varies from inspiratory effort, therefore depth changes from breath to breath

sedation is controlled by alternating the flow of gases + the operator must constantly monitor pts needs
- LA is still required
- Do not use during pregnancy
- pt does not loose consciousness

Special requirements/contraindications
A
- Pts must be accompanied for IV sedation
- Pts must not drive as responses may be affected for IV + RA
- cannot do RA if there is severe nasal obstruction
- obese pts may have problems if in supine state with both procedures
- careful assessment of pt must be made using ASA guide prior to sedation
