Antibiotics
used to treat infection caused by bacteria - bacteria can become immune to antibiotics if used over a prolonged period of time
Penicillin
used against spread of infection in periocorontitis + prevent secondary infection after oral surgery
typical dose 250mg
taken 4 times daily
3-5 days
Amoxicillin
type of penicillin with wider range of action to fight severe infections
typical dose 500mg
taken 3 times daily
taken for up to 5 days
Erythromycin
used for pts who are allergic to penicillin
Metronidazole
used against anaerobic bacteria often associated with periocorontitis, periodontal disease + acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG)
typical does 200-400 daily
taken 3 times daily depending on severity
has severe reaction to alcohol
Analgesics
relieve pain but provide no loss of consciousness or sensations
Paracetamol
reduces body temp when fever present, can cause liver damage if abused
Ibuprofen
has anti-inflammatory properties, is safer to use than paracetamol, not suitable for asthmatics. can cause stomach ulcers if used excessively
Aspirin
relieves pain + has anti-inflammatory properties - acts as an anticoagulant (blood thinner) so not to be given after surgical procedures
Antivirals
used to fight against infections caused by virus
herpes simplex is treated with acyclovir cream to prevent full development of a cold sore
