Ingested Seafood Toxins Flashcards
What are the toxins produced by sea food that causes reactions
- histamine: histamine release
- Tetrodotoxin: closure of sodium channels
- Ciguatoxin: opening of sodium channels
What is the source of histamine sea food poisoning
Dark meat fish such as- tuna, mahi-mahi, mackerel, bonito
What is the Moa of histamine sea food poisoning
It contains histamine decarboxylase that converts histidine to histamine
What are the symptoms of histamine sea food poisoning

- antihistamine
- albuterol
- epinephrine (+-)
What is the source of tetrodotoxin
Puffer fish
What is the moa of tetrodotoxin poisoning
It binds to fast voltage gated Na channels and leads to their closure and no depolarization
What are symptoms of tetrodotoxin
Nausea, diarrhea, parasthesias, weakness, dizziness, loss of reflexs
Treatment of tetrodotoxin
Supportive
Source of Ciguatoxin poisoning
Reef fish: braccuda, moray ell, snapper
Mechanism of action of Ciguatoxin poisoning
Opening of Na2+ channels causing depolarization
Symptoms of Ciguatoxin poisoning
Nausea vomiting diarrhea reversal of hot and cold sensation bradycardia heart block and hypotension
Treatment of Ciguatoxin poisoning
Supportive
