Q

Describe Trigeminal Neuralgia (tic douloureux)

A
  • Pain described as among the most acute known to mankind
  • In maxilla area
  • Maxillary nerve involved (V2)
  • Lightning strikes of facial pain, typically near the nose, lips, eyes, or ears
  • Pain usually initiated by touching face

Q

What is trigeminal neuralgia treated?

A

-Sponge placed between the cerebral artery and trigeminal nerve - to treat the neuralgia, the pulsing of the artery irritated the nerve

Q

What is Bell Palsy?

A

It involves paralysis of the facial muscles on the affected side. Usually involves the facial nervier the distal facial canal or its exit from the stylomastoid foramen

Q

What are symptoms for Bell Palsy?

A
  • Drooping of lips on affected side with food and saliva dribbling out
  • Lower eyelid falls away from eyeball
  • Food accumulates between the gums and the cheek
  • Loss of facial expression
  • Nasolabial fold will be missing from affected side
  • Nerve will usually regenerate and heal itself at least partly

Q

What complication can happen with the TMJ?

A

TMJ = temporomandibular joint
-Head of the mandible can slide forward on the articular disk if you open your mouth too wide - head of mandible can get ahead of mandibular tubercle & you can’t close your jaw –> doctor has to push it back in place

Q

What does the auriculotemporal nerve supply?
