Q

what is the general function of each of the branches of V3?

A

auricotemporal–sensory to the skin in front of the ear, buccal–sensory to the kucosa of the inside of the cheek, lingual–general sensation to the anterior 2/3 of tongue, inferior alveolar–sensory to the lower teeth

Q

which of the sensory branches of V3 gives off a small motor root to the region under the mandible? what is the nerve and what does it supply?

Q

how does special sense of taste reach the tongue?

A

fibers for special sensation of taste leave the FACIAL NERVE as it travels within the temporal bone in a branch called the chorda tympani. chorda tympani passes thru the middle ear cavity and enters the back side of the LINGUAL NERVE of V3 within the infratemporal fossa. taste fibers for the anterior 2/3 of the tongue are distributed by the lingual nerve.

Q

what does sensation for the posterior 1/3 of the tongue?

A

glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX) via a mixture of special and general visceral afferent fibers
