What is evidence based medicine?
The use of the best evidence in science to provide the best care to the individual patient
List some potential sources of bias
Selection bias - Selection of individuals that differs from the population
Funding bias - Tendency of a paper to support the interests of the financial supporter
Citation bias - Tendency to cite papers that are in favour of the report rather than not in favour
Reporting bias - selecting or suppressing certain results
What is a systematic review?
It attempts to identify, appraise and synthesis all empirical evidence that meets specific eligibility criteria to answer a given research question.
What is trial exclusion and inclusion?
Inclusion - Characteristics that subjects must have to be included in the study
Exclusion - Characteristics that disqualify patients from the trial
What is meta-analysis?
Where the results of individual studies are combined to produce an overall statistic
What are 95% confidence intervals
They describe the uncertainty of the estimate. Wide confidence intervals means there is a lower level of confidence
