Common Sense Model of Self Regulation of Health and Illness Flashcards
What are the basic assumptions of the common sense model?
It identifies the patient as a common sense scientist. It involve the patients regulation of their experiences, symptoms and changes over time.
identify the CSM’s parallel pathways in the ways in which people respond to health threats
Health messages can trigger two responses (emotional and cognitive);
Representation of illness risk (cognitive) which leads onto coping procedures and danger control and then the appraisal.
And the emotional reaction which leads to coping procedures and fear control and then appraisal (evaluation of effectiveness)
What is illness representation?
Can have several names including mental model. It is the patients common sense beliefs about their illness
What are the five components of the illness perception?
Identity Cause Timeline Consequences Curability/control-ability
Explain what is meant by identity?
The symptoms experienced as well as the person’s own label for the disease.
Explain what is meant by consequences
The patients perceptions of the possible effects the illness will have on their life
Explain what is meant by timeline?
The patients beliefs on how long the disease will last. Whether its chronic, acute or cyclical.
Explain what is meant by cause?
The patients are perceived cause of illness. (i.e. biological or psychosocial)
Explain what is meant by the cure/control-ability
The patients beliefs about whether the illness can be cured and the extent to which their outcome can be controlled.
Identify the assumptions of Common Sense Model
That the perceptions may have a valuable role in identifying which patients are likely to benefit from rehabilitation programmes.
What are the three types of timelines?
Acute (disease will be cured)
Chronic (lifelong disease)
Cyclic (diseases will come and go)
