What is information quality?
It is the attributes of data which has been transformed for a specific purpose. The attributes of the data include:
- source/authority
- content/relevance
- purpose/intended audience and
- timeliness
How do you determine the ‘source’ on the internet? (5)
finding the author’s name and checking for any biographical statements, finding the name of the organisation, checking the ‘About Us’ section, finding contact details, or checking the URL of the webpage.
The authority and reputation of the source of information will depend on what? (3)
The persons:
- expertise,
- reputation and
- status
The URL of the website can provide important details on the source provider. The type and location of the
source website all contribute to determine the quality of the information. What are the following? .com, .ac, .gov, .mil, .net and .org
.com - Commercial site
.edu or .ac - Educational or Academic site
.gov - Government site
.mil - Military site
.net - Network site
.org - Organisation (usually a not-for-profit) site
What is a file hosting service, online file storage provider, or cyberlocker?
They are Internet hosting services specifically designed to host static content, typically large files that are not web
pages. Typically they allow web and FTP (File Transport Protocol) access.
What are related services to a file hosting service?
Content displaying hosting services such as video, image, audio/music, virtual storage, and remote backup.
What is the Web2.0, where did the term come from and what is it more commonly known as today?
Tim O’Rielly coined the phrase and it referred to the supporting technologies. These were amplified when Amazon allowed two way communication and critique. It is now more commonly known as Social Media.
When did YouTube start?
Founded in 2005
How did blogging come about and where did the name come from?
In 1994 Justin Hall was the first web diary writer. The term blog comes from ‘weblog’ which was separated to ‘we blog’ by Peter Merholz in 1997.
What event really announced blogging to the world as a credible source of information?
The Iraq War in 2003, journalists used blogs to avoid censorship restrictions.
What is social bookmarking?
The practice of saving bookmarks to a public Web site and “tagging” them with keywords. Bookmarking, on the other hand, is the practice of saving the address
of a Web site you wish to visit in the future on your computer
What are social networks?
They are online services, platform, or site that focuses on building and reflecting of social relations among people who share interests and/or activities.

Mark Zuckerberg in 2004 while at Harvard University
What is microblogging and what is the most popular version?
It is defined as a networking service that allows mobile users to stay abreast of activities within a group by receiving frequent published updates, typically of 140 characters or less. Twitter
What is a wiki?
A Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit a virtual document (known as wiki’s) in a web page format using any type of Web browser.
