Q

What does IPA refer to?

A

It refers to the mental processes allowing a child to learn.

The most important mental process in learning is memory.

Q

What are the 4 key terms?

A

Capacity= how much info can be stored.

Duration= how long info stays in the store.

Encoding= the storage of info in memory.

Retrieval= getting info from the store (especially LTM).

Q

What is sensory memory?

A

Info is coming in from the 5 senses.

Activities should encourage the children to use all of their 5 senses to remember info.

Younger children will use this more but they won’t be able to process the info yet.

Q

What is short term memory?

A

Info is only held for a brief amount of time and the capacity is limited.

Use of mnemonics, visual props and chunking info can aid STM.

Short instructions and interesting activities will help aid a child’s attention and move the info into this store.

Q

What is long term memory?

A

Info is held for a longer period of time (potentially forever) and the capacity is larger than STM.

This develops at 3 years old.

Repetition helps to encode info from STM to LTM.

Varied activities helps store the info in LTM.

Questioning children helps them make links and store the info in LTM.

Prompts and pictures encourages children to recall info.
