Info Flashcards
Wireless Device
A 2-way computing device capable of transmitting and receiving radio signals
- Cell phone
- Tablet
- Smartphone or PDA (BlackBerry, iPhone, Android)
- Laptop Card•Netbook
Cell Site
Any location that houses antennas and radio equipment
•Usually a tower or monopole
•Other options:Roof topSide of buildingWater towerInside building (e.g., inside airports)
•Communicates via 2-way radio signal
Wireless Switch
- The “brains”
- Connects wireless device to other wireless or landline devices
- Authenticates and routes the call
- Monitored 24/7
Blackhaul
- Connects cell site to wireless switch
- Typically wireline circuit
- historically copper wiring
- upgrading to ethernet (fiber) to handle increased traffic
- can also be high capacity wireless microwave links
Radio Spectrum
The link btw a wireless device cell tower antenna
Lower Frequency
- better builfing penetration
- covers greter distance
Higher Frequency
- fades a shorter distances
- obstructed by obstacles (e.g. trees or humidity)
Registration
- Wireless devices periodically registers with the network
- The network pinpoints the location of the device
- Enables faster and more efficient delivery of calls and data
Data Sessions
- SMS, MMS, Internet Browsing
- Connection of wireless device to cell site
- Routed to data switch
- Routed to Internet server to establish and connect the session
GPRS
General Packet Radio Service
- 2g
- enhancement to GSM that adds packet-switched data
- always available data connection is maintained
EDGE
Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE)
- upgrade to existing GPRS networks that allow for faster data speeds
- 2.5G
UMTS
Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service
- Also known as Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (W-CDMA)
- Upgrade to existing EDGE network for full 3G services
- Support for international roaming with appropriate device
HSPA
High Speed Packet Access
- Enhancement to UMTS network technology that allows for faster data download speeds
- All our UMTS networks support HSPA
- No domestic roaming partners
- 205 networks (carriers) in 88 countries have deployed HSPA
HSPA+
4G LTE
-enhanced fiber-optics and ethernet blackhaul to cell sites, delivering the best combination of 4G speed to customers
1xRTT
Single Carrier Radio Transmission Technology
- Next generation network for CDMA carriers
- Includes both voice and packet switched data services
- Available domestically from Verizon, Sprint/Nextel, Alltel, and other regional carriers
- Limited support for roaming services domestically and internationally
EV-DO
- Data only network
- Comparable to 2.5G technology for CDMA based carriers
EV-DO Revision A
EV-DO Revision A (Rev A)
•3G CDMA technology
•Upgrade from EV-DO
IntraLATA
within (or inside) the LATA
InterLATA
Across LATA lines
IntraLATA/Interstate
within the LATA, but across state lines
InterLATA/Intrastate
Across LATA lines, but within the state
InterLATA/Interstate
Across LATA lines and across state lines
Legacy B
former BellSouth
Legacy C
fromer Cingular
Legacy S
former SBC
Legacy T
former at&t
at&t product buckets
-infrastructure- traditional voice
-data ip- information tranmitted via packet over the internet
-application services- web-based application services
-Most of world (MOW)- global services billed in foreign currency
Mobility- using wireless technology to perform functions more efficiently
analog waves
•Sine waves Electronic waves •FluctuationPitchVolumeSpeed •Affected by noise, dirt, distance, etc. •Not ideal for data
digital signal
- Square waves
- Electrical pulses—1’s and 0’s—On and Off
- Affected by distance, but can restore itself
- Ideal for data transmission
Inside Wiring
- Deregulated
- Customer side of demarcation
- Customer has a choice
- Negotiate with new POTS installation
