Influence on Relationships (AO1) Flashcards
How does attachment influence relationships Over Time?
Internal Working Model:
the first relationship w the mother provides the infant with a mental template of what relationships should look like
↓
Continuity Hypothesis:
the attachment behaviours in the iwm continue to follow the same template in the future
What are 4 Behaviours influenced by the Internal Working Model?
Childhood Friendships
Poor Parenting
Romantic Relationships
Mental Health
What influence does the IWM have on behaviour in Childhood Friendships?
securely attached infants = best quality childhood friends
vs. insecure attached = friendship difficulties
ALSO predicts bullying behaviour (Myron-Wilson & Smith)
What influence does the IWM have on behaviour in Poor Parenting?
Harlow found that monkeys without a cloth mother were poor parents
+
Bailey et al (2007) looked at attachment of 99 mothers to their babies + their own mothers using the SS & interviews
= majority of mothers had the same attachment to their babies as they did to their own mothers
What influence does the IWM have on behaviour in Romantic Relationships?
Securely attached infants = secure romantic relationships
Insecure-Avoidant = feared intimacy + uncomfortable being too close
Insecure-Resistant = love is an obsession, worry their partner might not really love them
What influence does the IWM have on behaviour in Mental Health?
Insecure attachment could lead to poor mental health
Harlow found that monkeys without a cloth mother showed signs of severe stress incl. diarrhoea
What did Myron-Wilson & Smith investigate?
insecure Resistant = bully
insecure Avoidant = victim
Secure attachment = unlikely to be involved in bullying as support from friendships
Assessed attachment type + bullying involvement using a questionnaire on 196 children aged 7-11 from London
BUT// social desirability bias (lie about being bullied) = lacks internal validity
What did H & S create to investigate the influence of attachment on relationships?
Hazan & Shaver created the Love Quiz
What was the Aim of the love quiz?
h & s were interested in Bowlby’s idea that an infant’s first attachment formed an internal working model
SO
they wanted to see if there was a correlation between the infant’s attachment type and their future approach to romantic relationships
What was the Procedure of the love quiz?
love quiz had 2 components: a measure of attachment type & a love experience questionnaire
love quiz was printed in a local newspaper ‘The Rocky Mountain News’
h&s analysed the first 620 replies of ppl aged 14-82 - they classified ppl using ainsworth’s attachment types
Example of a love quiz question?
Select the statement that best describes your attitude towards love:
(ia) it is rare to find a person one can really fall in love with
(s) in some relationships romantic love never fades
(ir) most of us could love many people equally well, there is no ‘one true love’
What did they conclude about Secure types?
avg. 10 years relationship
- described love experiences as happy, friendly, trusting
- being able to accept partner’s faults
- more enduring
- happy to be close to others
What did they conclude about insecure Resistant types?
avg. 5 years relationship
- love as an obsession
- desire for reciprocation
- emotional highs and low
- jealousy
- desire for intense closeness could frighten others away
What did they conclude about Secure types?
avg. 6 years relationship
- feared intimacy
- emotional highs and lows
- believed didn’t need love to be happy
- uncomfortable being close to and/ or depending on others
What was the Results of the love quiz?
h&s found a striking correlation between the infant attachment types + the adult romantic love styles
