What is the difference between crohns disease and ulcerative colitis?
Crohns disease: inflammation of colon with skip lesions
Ulcerative colitis: inflammation/lesions only present in the terminal (descending) part of the colon
What are the symptoms of IBD?
Abdominal pain
Passage of mucus
Perianal disease
Bloody stools
Diarrhoea
What tests are performed which can confirm a diagnosis of IBD?
Endoscopy
Colonoscopy
White patches will indicate inflamed tissue
What are the 4 phases of IBD?
- Initiating triggers
- Acute intestinal inflammation
- Chronicity
- Destruction of tissue leading to complications
