What is ulcerative colitis?
Chronic hyper-inflammatory disease that affects the innermost lining of the colon and the rectum
What are the symptoms of Ulcerative colitis?
Fatigue Vomiting Weight loss Diarrhoea Abdominal pain
What can severe inflammation due to UC cause?
ulcers in the colon lining which can bleed and produce pus.
secondary infections can develop leading to sepsis.
What is Crohn’s disease?
Inflammation throughout the lining of the GI tract and gut.
What is IBD?
Inflammatory bowel disease
What causes IBD?
The immune system malfunctioning (attacking itself)

What is a colostomy?
resecutive surgery of a section of the colon, separating the colon from the bowel.
A pouch can be placed across the stoma
What are corticosteroids, and why are they used to treat inflammatory conditions?
Steroid hormones produced in the adrenal cortex. They have metabolic functions and can aid inflammatory treatments.
