The study of the principles, regulations and practices governing the way any research should be conducted
What are the 3 moral systems?
Consequentialism Deontology
Virtue ethics
What is consequentialism?
Focuses on the consequences of actions.
An action is right if it produces the best consequences
What is deontology?
Actions are deemed right or wrong based on their compliance with moral laws or principles
What approval must clinical research involving human subjects and tissue have?
Research Ethics Committee (REC) approval; intended to protect both researchers and participants
What training is mandatory for all NHS staff involved in human research?
Good clinical practice (GCP)
What are the 2 types of consequentialism?
Maximising Consequentialism
Satisfying consequentialism
What is maximising consequentialism?
moral rightness depends only on which consequences are best
What is satisfying consequentialism?
Do what creates enough utility
What is utilitarianism?
Actions are right if they are useful or for the benefit of a majority.
What is virtue ethics?
Concerned with the way individuals live their lives, and less concerned in assessing particular actions
