Inflammation and Wound Healing Flashcards
Inflammation
nonspecific but predictable response of living tissue to injury
dynamic process
protective role, generally beneficial
may have noxious side effects (fever)
may become uncontrollable (pulmonary TB)
only occurs in living tissues
Acute
sudden onset and of short duration
Chronic
lasts a long time
why did you make this a card
Vital Reaction
if histologic signs of inflammation are found in tissues recovered at autopsy, this indicates that the injury occurred before death
inflammation cannot develop postmortem
Five Cardinal Signs of Inflammation
Calor (heat) Rubor (redness) Tumor (swelling) Dolor (pain) Functio laesa (loss of function)
Body’s first response to injury
changes in blood flow
Pathogenesis of Inflammation
mechanical stimulus stimulates nerves
smooth muscle cells on pre-capillary arterioles act as sphincters
regulation of inflow of blood into capillaries
relaxation of smooth muscle cells allows the blood to rush into capillaries (redness, swelling, warmth)
