Infectious Respiratory Disease of the Dog Flashcards
What 2 viruses and bacteria are involved in the kennel cough complex?
Canine Parainfluenza virus, Canine adenovirus type 2, bordetella bronchoseptica
What does type 1 canine adenovirus cause?
hepatitis
When are dogs vunerable to canine herpes virus?
Neonatal puppies under 3 days of age who are not suckling sufficiently
What cells of the respiratory tract does canine respiratory coronavirus infect?
Tracheal epithelium and goblet cells.
Why mycoplasma species is associated with respiratory disease in the dog?
M. cynos
How is canine infectious respiratory disease spread?
Transmitted by aerosols/droplets. Spread quickly and seen commonly in dogs housed in large groups
What are the symptoms of CIRD?
Cough, retching, nasal and ocular discharge
What further presentations suggest the CIRD has developed into systemic infection?
Depression, pyrexia and inappetance
What ways can you test for CIRD?
Tracheo-bronchial lavage, faecal swab (rule out angiostrongylus), Haematology, Radiography or Rhinoscopy
How would you treat CIRD?
Antibiotics, Cough suppressants, bronchodilators, mucolytics
What immunoglobin do intranasal vaccines stimulate?
mostly IgA
What is the disadvantage of intranasal vaccines?
It provides only short term immunity
How long before going into kennels must kennel cough vaccine be administered?
5 days
What body fluids is canine distemper virus shed in?
All of them
Describe the pathogenesis of canine distemper virus
Virus enters respiratory tract, spreads to tonsils and local lymph nodes, infects monocytes and macrophages, Viraemia and systemic dissemination
