sexual behaviour
how does IM present
non-specific symptoms such as malaise or fever
symptoms of pharyngitis (sore throat)
most commonly there will be tender lymphadenopathy
splenomegaly
investigations
1 bloods
-FBC (lymphocytosis and atypical lymphocytosis)
2 heterophile antibodies
-if negative but signs and symptoms indicate IM progress to:
3 EBVs-specific antibodies (sensitive and specific)
DDx for IM
group A streptococcal pharyngitis
what is the management for IM
supportive
- bed rest
- paracetomal
- NSAIDs
what should be given in addition in IM with upper airway obstruction or haemolytic anaemia or thromobytopenia
corticosteroids (prednisolone)
