what is infectious mononucleosis most commonly caused by
EBV (Epstein-Barr Virus) in 90% of cases
is infectious mononucleosis worse in adults or children
in children, its more mild
more severe in adults

EBV is mainly caused by saliva (kissing etc)
presenting symptoms
fever, pharyngitis, lymphadenopathy, malaise, splenomegaly
rash, hepatitis, jaundice
risk factors for infectious mononucleosis
kissing and sexual intercourse
investigations for infectious mononucleosis
FBC (high WCC, lymphocytosis)
heterophile antibodies,
EBV specific antibodies,
LFTs
management of infectious mononucleosis
supportive care (paracetamol and ibuprofen for pain relief)
corticosteroids (prednisolone)- helps with lymphadenopathy
