what type of rash do you get with measles
‘maculopapular’ - flat red patches/spots starting at face (tip of hairline) + behind ears ➡ whole body
measles causative organism
airborne morbillivirus (part of paramyxocirus family) - spread by aerosol transmission
when does rash appear in measles
measles rash appears a few days after cold-like symptoms
first symptoms of measles?
cold-like symptoms:
* fever
* runny nose
* conjunctivitis (red, sore, watery eyes)
* cough
how many days between spread of infection → symptoms starting
measles incubation period
symptoms begin 10-14 days after exposure to virus
what specific feature (symptom) may be seen in measles
- Koplik spots - small white ‘grain of salt’ spots inside cheeks (on buccal mucosa)
- usually appear BEFORE measles rash
most common complication of measles (+ how it presents)
otitis media - unilateral ear pain + fever
redness and swelling of tympanic membrane would be seen on examination
measles - notifiable?/not notifiable?
notifiable → inform public health
complication of measles that’s the most common cause of death in these patients
pneumonia
1st line Abx for Campylobacter
Clarithromycin
Indications for Abx in campylobacter infection
- pt is immunocompromised
- severe symptoms (multiple episodes of loose stool, bloody diarrhoea, fever)
campylobacter infection is usually self-limiting
