Infections Flashcards
What are the three common dental infections?
Abscesses
Cellulitis
Osteromyelitis
What are the three main components of the infectious process?
- Virulence (extent of infection) of the organism for its host.
- Resistance of the Host
- Dose
What type of people develop an abscess?
Healthy people.
What are the signs of inflammation?
HINT: HERP
Heat
Edema (swelling)
Redness
Pain
What is an abscess?
A localized area of trapped pathogens.
What happens to surrounding structures of an abscess?
Tissue dies, suppuration/perilant discharge = puss can occur
What is the appearance of an abscess called?
Fistula (looks like a pimple)
Why do healthy people develop an abscess?
The bacteria drains from the apical foramen directly into the bone marrow. Bone marrow is the birth site of the immune system. Healthy ppl have bone marrow that will kick that bacteria back out and push it into the cortical bone to drain elsewhere.
What is cellulitis?
Diffuse edema from inflammation; resulting from infection. Spreads between spaces.
True or False, cellulitis is less dangerous than an abscess.
False
What is osteomyelitis?
An inflammation of bone marrow.
Where is Osteomyelitis most common?
The mandible because of its supplied by the classic circulation pattern.
How does Osteyomyelitis damage the bone?
It weakens the bone causing sequestra of bone (death of bone tissue) which results in loss of big chunks of bone at once.
How can infection be spread in the body?
Sinus
Blood stream
Lymphatics
Spaces
What is sinusitis?
Inflammation of the sinus.
