Q

Why do healthy people develop an abscess?

A

The bacteria drains from the apical foramen directly into the bone marrow. Bone marrow is the birth site of the immune system. Healthy ppl have bone marrow that will kick that bacteria back out and push it into the cortical bone to drain elsewhere.

15
Q

Where does sinusitis occur?

A

In the maxillary sinus.

16
Q

Maxillary sinusitis typically effects what system in the body?

A

The upper respiratory tract.

17
Q

What dental symptoms can occur that may indicate maxillary sinusitis?

A

All of the teeth hurt but the patient can not localize the pain to one tooth.

18
Q

What is bacteremia?

A

Bacteria in the bloodstream.

19
Q

Why is bacteremia not a major concern?

A

In healthy patients it is transient and not an issue. When we eat something we can cause bacteremia.

20
Q

What are ways we can prevent infections?

A
  1. Thorough MH
  2. Early Diagnosis and Treatment
  3. Technique used for local administration (no seeding infections from injections)
  4. Rinses and Rubber dams
