Antibiotics that target cell wall
Penicillins
Cephalosporins
Carbapenems
Vancomycin (only non beta-lactam one)
Antibiotics that inhibit folic acid metabolism
Trimethoprim
Sulfamethoxazole
Co-Trimoxazole is combo of both of these two
How does metronidazole work?
Is only reduced to active form in anaerobic cells
It inhibits nucleic acid synthesis
Which antibiotics inhibit protein synthesis by targeting the ribosome?
Macrolides e.g. mycins
Tetracyclines e.g. doxycycline
Gentamicin
Chloramphenicol
Define septic shock and severe sepsis
Septic Shock is a systolic BP <90 DESPITE fluid resus OR lactate >4mmol/L
Severe Sepsis is sepsis that has caused organ dysfunction e.g. hypoxia, AKI, DIC etc.
Sepsis 6
3 tests: Blood lactate, cultures, urine output
3 treatments: O2, broad spectrum antibiotics, IV fluids
Treatment of neutropenic sepsis
Piperacillin and Tazobactam (tazocin)
Antibiotics for a chest infection
Amoxicillin three times a day for 5 days
Doxycycline if allergic
If on hormonal contraception then clarithromycin
Why shouldn’t doxycycline be given to pregnant woman?
Can cause teeth staining in the baby
