- Restricted movement

- Fever

- Joint aspiration
- Gram stain -> microscopy and culture
- IV empirical Abs
What is the antibiotic treatment for septic arthritis?
o Flucloxacillin IV 4-6 weeks
Penicillin allergy = clindamycin
What is the most common causative organism of septic arthritis?
Stahylococci
What is the most common causative organism of septic arthritis in a young, sexually active patient?
Neisseria Gonorrhoeae
What are the Rx for septic arthritis?
- Rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis
- Prosthetic joints
- Low socioeconomic status
- IV drug users
- Alcoholism
- DM
- Previous intra-articular corticosteroid injection
- Cutaneous ulcers
What is the difference in presentation between septic arthritis and otseomyelitis?
Osteomyelitis has a more indolent, subacute presentation and a background of local infection
What does haematogenous spread of bacteria usually cause?
Vertebral osteomyelitis
What are the Rx for haematogenous spread osteomyelitis?
- Sickle cell anaemia
- IVDU
- Immunosuppression
- Infective endocarditis
What are the Rx for non-haematogenous spread osteomyelitis?
- DM
- Foot ulcers/pressure sores
- PAD
What is the management of osteomyelitis?
Flucoxacillin +/- rifampicin
What is the common causative organism of osteomyelitis?
Staphylococci
What is the common causative organism of osteomyelitis in sickle cell anaemia patients?
Salmonella
