Infection Response Flashcards
Innate Immunity
innate immune responses are the first line of defense against invading pathogens.
Acquired Immunity
A type of immunity that develops when a person’s immune system responds to a foreign substance or microorganism, or that occurs after a person receives antibodies from another source.
Physical Barriers
Natural barriers include the skin, mucous membranes, tears, earwax, mucus, and stomach acid.
Chemical barriers
Sweat, mucus, tears, saliva, and breastmilk all contain antimicrobial substances, such as the enzyme lysozyme, that kill pathogens, especially bacteria
B-cells
a key player of the adaptive immune response that is responsible for humoral immunity in mammals.
T-cells
part of the immune system and develop from stem cells in the bone marrow. They help protect the body from infection and may help fight cancer
