Infection Inflammation Cirrhosis of Liver Flashcards
What is bile duct obstruction?
Cause: Cholestasis (gallstones) hardens deposits in gallbladder
duct
s/s: pruritic (itching), hyperbilirubinemia, jaundice, dark urine, steatorrhea (oily stools)
What is NAFLD?
metabolic syndrome, obesity, insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia (increased fatty build up), cells can rupture
s/s: most chronic liver disease, steatosis (>5% of liver contains fat), abnormal liver enzyme levels may be present
What is hepatitis?
inflammation of the liver, transmitted through blood contact, needle or blood products, sexual fluids, most of which do not recover completely
can lead to hepatocellular cancer (liver cancer)
What is Hepatitis B s/s?
jaundice for months, lifelong (flu-like) symptoms, hepatic encephalopathy (confusion), damage to liver, hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, and cirrhosis
What is Hepatitis C?
acute infection, usually mild, may be chronic, dormant, asymptomatic, and mutates rapidly
incubation period: 2 weeks–8 months
What is Cirrhosis?
scar tissue that causes permanent liver damage, loss of detoxification process (increases drugs and hormones in system),
decreased coagulation factures (bleeding, brusing)
