Recommended treatment for exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
Amoxicillin or tetracycline or clarythromycin
Recommended treatment for uncomplicated CAP
- Amoxicillin (doxycycline or clarithromycin in penicillin allergic)
- Add fluclox if staphylococci suspected eg in influenza
Recommended treatment for pneumonia possibly caused by atypical pathogens
-Clarithromycin
Recommended treatment for HAP
- Within 5 days of admission: co-amoxiclav or cefuroxime
- More Han 5 days admission: piperacillin with tazobactam OR broad spectrum cephalosporin (eg ceftazidime) OR a quinolone (eg cirprofloxacin)
Recommended treatment for lower UTI
- Trimethoprim or nitrofurantoin for 3 days
- Alternative: amoxicillin or cephalosporin
Recommended treatment for lower UTI in pregnant women
- Avoid trimethoprim in 1st trimester as is folate antagonist
- Ciprofloxacin is C/I throughout pregnancy
- Do MSU but if pt is pyrexial and has clear symptoms of UTI give antibiotics regardless
- 7 day course should be given
Recommended treatment for acute pyelonephritis
-Broad spectrum cephalosporin or quinolone for 10-14 days
Recommended treatment for acute prostate Tis
- Quinolone or trimethoprim
- Do MSU for sensitivity
- Course lasts several weeks
Recommended treatment for gonorrhea
-Intramuscular ceftriaxone +oral azithromycin
Recommended treatment for chlamydia
-Doxycycline or azithromycin
Recommended treatment for PID
-Oral ofloxacin + oral metronidazole
Or
-IM ceftriaxone + oral doxycycline + oral metronidazole
Recommended treatment for syphilis
-Benzathine benzylpenicillin or doxycycline or erythromycin
Recommended treatment for BV
-Oral or topical metronidazole OR topical clindamycin
