Infection and the Non-Specific Immune Response Flashcards
1
Q
How are pathogens able to enter the human body?
A
- Cuts in skin
- Contaminated food/drink
- Inhalation
- Other mucosal surfaces (nose, mouth, genitals)
2
Q
What barriers does the human body have in order to prevent infection?
A
- Skin
- Stomach acid
- Gut and skin flora
- Lysozymes
3
Q
How does gut and skin flora prevent infection?
A
- They compete with pathogens for space and nutrients.
- This limits the number of pathogens able to survive in/on the body, making it harder for them to infect the body
4
Q
What are gut and skin flora?
A
Harmless microorganisms that live on our skin and in our gut
5
Q
What are lysozymes?
A
Digestive enzymes that kill bacteria
6
Q
How do lysozymes kill bacteria?
A
They break down the bacteria’s cell wall, causing them to lyse
7
Q
What are inflammation, phagocytes and the production of interferon involved in ?
A
The non-specific immune response
