Infection Flashcards
Factors to consider when administering Anti-Virals?
- Anti-viral meds are generally very specific to particular viral infections, but generally based in inhibiting replication as oppose to cell lysis.
- Difficult to kill all virus.
- Allergic Rx to specific med is the main concern are the main concern and fair
Common Side effects of Antibiotic therapy
- Predisposes for C difficile
- Disrupts natural flora and fauna in GI (diarrhea, abd pain, L/O appetite, nausea, vomiting)
- Vaginal yeast infections
- Hepatic toxicity
- Nephrotoxicity
Why are viruses difficult to treat?
They remain inside eukaryote cell. Dangerous to target self-cell.
LIfespan considerations for antibiotic therapy (Peds, Elderly, Pregnancy) Hint- Similar to all lifespan concerns
- Pediatric- Dosage by weight
- Elderly- lower dosages (decline in organ functions), polypharmacy, GI sensitivities, susceptible host (immune compromised)
- Pregnancy- potential harm to fetus and mother
Common side effects of Antibiotics?
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
* Neprho and hepatic toxicity
When are antibiotics used as a prophylactic
Pre or Post op for prevention of infection
Empirical use of Antibiotic
Doc uses clinical judgement to guess most likely bacteria causing infection before C& S can verify. Generally broad spectrum antibiotics are used.
What is a Superinfection?
Infection that comes abbot during tx of another primary infection and often resistant to past infection antibiotics
• C Difficile being the common example
