Define Agonist vs Antagonist
Agonist- Molecules that activate receptors
Antagonists- produce their effects by preventing the activation of receptors by agonist. Blocking endogenous molecules or actions of drugs at receptors
Mechanism of Action
Refers to the specific biochemical interaction through which a drug substance produces its pharmacological effect.
Potency
Amount of drug required to have desired affect
Efficacy
Producing the desired effect. Effectiveness of the drug
Peak
Time it takes for the drug to reach it’s maximum effect
Maintenance dose
Before plasma levels can drop back toward zero intermittent maintenance doses are given to keep plasma drug levels in a therapeutic range.
Duration
The length of time that the drug concentration is sufficient to create a response
Half life
The length of time required for a medication to decrease in concentration in the plasma by one half after administration
Pharmacogenetics
The field of study that develops effective and safe medication dosages specific to an individuals DNA decreasing adverse effects. (ex. some people metabolize a drug abnormally quickly)
