What is it called if only the scalp is affected?
Cradle cap
What age does it usually affect ?
Babies < 3 months
Usually resolves by 12 months
Other than scalp, what other areas can be involved?
Cheeks, folds of neck, nappy area, folds of elbows and knees
Is it itchy?
No
What features are associated?
A yellow coloured, greasy scale
What is it commonly associated with?
Bad nappy rash - often co infected with candida
How do you differentiate from atopic dermatitis?
Eczema typically: Onset after 3 months Very itchy Dry, cracked skin - not an oily yellow scale Typically nappy area spared
What basic management steps can be done?
Keep areas clean and dry
Wash with warm water then pat dry
Keep exposed to air as much as possible
Avoid soap
Cradle cap - was off flakes with baby oil or soft paraffin
Nappy rash - change soiled nappies frequently, zinc based cream
