What is erythema multiforme?
A type of hypersensitivity reaction
What is the most common trigger?
Herpes simplex
What forms is it divided into?
Minor
Major
Describe minor form
Erythematous well defined round lesions on extensor surface of peripheries, palms and soles
Evolve at different stages into pathognomonic target lesions
In the minor form, is there mucosal involvement?
Minimal
Are upper or lower limbs more commonly affected?
Upper
Describe the major form
Associated systemic upset
Fever
Severe mucosal involvement
What causes it?
Viruses - herpes simplex Bacteria - mycoplasma, streptococcus Drugs - penicillin, sulphonamides, carbamazepine, NSAIDS, allopurinol CT disease e.g SLE Sarcoidosis Malignancy
How is it managed?
No treatment in majority of cases needed
Potent topical steroids to relieve rash discomfort
Treat cause e.g aciclovir for HSV, antibiotics for mycoplasma
Oral steroids if severe
