Describe how it appears
Symmetrical, brown, velvety plaques
= hyperpigmentation and hyperkeratosis
Where is it often found?
Neck
Axilla
Groin
I.e the folds of the skin
What can cause it?
Gastrointestinal cancer DM Obesity PCOS Acromegaly Cushing’s Hypothyroidism Familial
What drugs can cause it?
Oral contraceptive
Nicotinic acid
What does hyperkeratosis mean?
Thickening of the skin
What causes acanthosis nigricans?
Not clearly understood, but thought to be related to insulin resistance
What is the most common type?
Obesity related
What are often found around the affected areas?
Skin tags
When might pruritis be associated?
With any type, but particularly if associated with malignancy = paraneoplastic pruritis
Can acanthosis nigricans appear on mucus membranes?
Yes - oral cavity, nasal and laryngeal mucosa and oesophagus
How is it managed?
Correct the underlying disease process
Are tumours in malignant acanthosis nigricans usually aggressive?
Yes and spread quickly
