Infant Neurological Development Flashcards
Nature
that there is something in us - in our brain for us to be able to use language
Nurture
the types of relationships we have and social understandings we have
Brain Development - Brain Weight
first two years –> 35% increase in brain weight
Brain development - Neuronal Development
increase in the number of connections as you grow older - where neurons communicate with each other
Myelination - myelin
fatty substance that goes around your neuron
Myelination - myelin sheath
it grows over the years and it allows our brain to grow more efficiently and also increases the efficiency
Reflexes
low level functions - happen in the low parts of the brain - you don’t have to think about it because it’s a not a high level thought
Prenatal hearing - theoretical quagmire
babies can distinguish between sounds ex: b & p and hear the differences in sound
testing prenatal hearing
sonograms - we can listen to infant’s heart beat and we can take pictures to see how they respond to sound
prenatal auditory milestones
coceala and auditory nerve at 24 weeks
prenatal auditory environment
it’s not easy for them to hear because of the sound of blood flow that could be as loud as a phone or motorcycle
bases for visual learning - acuity
at birth they can see 8 inches away
at 4 months they can finally have adult like vision
