Fine Motor Skills
The use of fingers and hand, as an example, infants being able to grasp their parents’ fingers or suck them thumbs.
Gross Motor Skills
Are large movements in the body e.g. the arms and legs, are used when a baby is crawling.
Innate Reflexes
Are available when the baby is born.

Rooting Reflex
When a person brushes their finger across a baby’s face, he or she will turn their head towards it, and suck your finger or if breastfeeding it will start sucking your breast.

Grasp Reflex
Stroke your finger in your baby’s palm and it should grasp onto your finger.

Tongue-thrust Reflexes
If you touch a baby’s spoon onto the tip of their tongue it will push the spoon back out. The reflex helps them of choking on foreign objects.

Intellectual Development
In the first few months, a baby will copy work actions e.g. you stick your tongue out they would copy you. Sounds they don’t recognise they will respond with coos.
Later on babies ‘explore’ the world and toys involving, squares, triangles and circles, for example, won’t identify certain shapes fit into their respect size and shape so will smash a triangle into a circle.
Language Development
They use symbols and certain actions as a language before the start talking.
For example, a baby might smile when you’re there and/or cry for certain needs.
Later on, they might respond to the changes in the tone of your voice or move their eyes in the general direction of the noise.
Later on from that, they might say a few words like “dada”, “mama” and “uh-oh” and/or respond to simple actions “come here”.
Emotion Development
They will be comforted by someone who is familiar, strangers may induce crying. The also start to listen to voices and they respond to social stimulation.
Later on, they recognize their names and start laughing out loud.
Social Development
They may respond positively to touch and may show pleasure in response to social stimulation.
Later on, enjoy games like Peek-a-boo -lack of object permanence, showing dismay as the loss of a toy and/or have fear in new situations.
