Early Adulthood 19-45 Years // Emotional Development Flashcards
Romance
Romance:
Those in satisfying relationships tend to show a higher self-esteem and well-being, while those who are in search unsuccessfully tend to experience and display to the opposite. There are three types of attachment in romantic relationships.
Secure Attachment - A trusting relationship and the couple will feel that each other are good friends as well as a lover.
Resistant Attachment - Are defined by the frequent ups and downs in the relationship with unpredictable changes.
Avoid Attachment - Consists of a cold emotional connection and mistrust. Could result in issues like infidelity and alcoholism.
Leaving Home
Young adults will frequently make sacrifices such as adjusting to a lower standard of living, for the opportunity to live alone. This allows for the development of independence and self-reliance. However, most young adults return to the parents after a period of living away whether it’s after university or times of financial hardship.
Leaving home can result in strong emotional growth if done right but if you leave to early it can cause no emotional growth as you may leave to early.
Career Development
Career has a major impact on emotional development during early adulthood. As you leave home in the pursuit of a career, further education helps in emotional growth. Men tend to put heavy investment into their goals, while women are split between starting a family or pursuing their career and developing in said career. Because of these investments if a career is successful this can lead to healthy emotional developments and high self-esteem especially in men.
Social Clock Theory
This theory suggests that adults create an internal calendar for them to achieve their goals. In the feminine clock tends to start off with an urge to marry, give birth and build a family. The masculine clock will be to push for career developments.
Despite, these gender-specific clocks a male can subscribe to the female clock and vice versa, however, in both sets in a person doesn’t achieve their goals in the calendar the may have a decline in self-esteem.
Erikson’s Theory
Those in early adulthood are said to be struggling with intimacy as opposed to isolation. This refers to the desire for a stable long-term relationship. Those who have achieved intimacy are thought to host a range of positive attributes, such as confidence and acceptance. Alternatively, those in isolation are more likely to fear loneliness and abandonment. Intimacy requires an individual to sacrifice some of his independence for another person.
