Define acculturation.
The loss of a minority group’s distinctive culture in relation to the dominant culture.
What is cline?
The differences in traits across in a population across a geographical area.
Ethnogenesis.
The emergence of new ethnicities in response to changing social circumstances.
Nonconcordant.
Genetic traits inherited independently rather than as a package.
For example, skin colour and blood type are non concordant, therefore the concept of a biological race via genetics is STUPID.
Intersectionality
The idea that the prejudices one experiences aren’t exclusive to class, race, gender, etc. but that they all impact eachother.
Amalgamation
The interactions between members of distinct ethnic and cultural groups that reduce barriers between the groups over time.
Ethnic group
People in a society that claim a distinct identity based on shared characteristics and ancestry.
Ethnicity
The degree to which one identifies with an ethnic group.
Hypodescent
Racial classification system used in US that classifies a mixed race individual as the race with the least privilege.
Also called one drop rule.
Pigmentocracy
A society in which skin colour strongly correlates with social status.
Ex. brazil
Symbolic ethnicity
Limited / occasional displays of ethnic pride to show off.
Tipos
Racial classification system in Brazil based on slight, but noticeable changes in appearance. Members of the same family can be considered different tipos.
Assimilation
Pressure put on minorities to adopt the dominant culture.
Multiculturalism
Maintenance of many cultures within one society.
Race
Categorizing humans based on physical differences.
