What is an intersex individual?
An individual who has both male and female reproductive parts.
Define feminism.
The movement advocating for equality of women.
What is gender ideology?
The preconceived ideas an individual has about the categorization of gender based on their culture.
What is “third gender”
Concept of a third gender apart from male and female.
What is androgyny?
The fluidity and variability of the capacity to do things within a gender/sex.
What is morale building? Describe it.
One of the four categories of human work.
This type of work integrates people, and builds connections between them. This work is often prescribed to women across societies.
Ex. planning a family reunion
What is a dyad?
2 individuals in a socially approved pairing.
Who are the hijara?
Group of individuals within India that were born male, but expressed themselves in a more feminine way, undergoing procedures to make themselves more feminine.
An example of a third gender.
What is the patriarchy?
The male dominated social and political structure that prioritizes males over females in every section of society.
What is biological determinism?
The idea that males and females are inherently different reproductively and in other aspects.
This theory also believes that men and women must be biologically attracted to each other.
Describe the first, second and third shifts.
The idea that describes how working women are often overworked and have to overcompensate to pick up slack for others in family.
First shift - actual work shift
Second shift - household chores
Third shift - just being at home becomes the work
What are the four categories of human work?
Production, reproduction, status enhancement, morale building.
What is production? Describe it.
One of the 4 categories of human work.
Work generating money, wages, income of some sort. Thought of as “going to work”
Often prescribed to men.
What is reproduction? Describe it.
The work of making and raising babies.
Associated with women.
What is status enhancement? Describe it.
The work of enhancing a family’s or husband’s social status.
Can be done by hosting lavish social events for man to show off that he is able to afford to have a non-working wife.
What are binary cultures?
Cultures with a binary gender system.
What are expectations and roles in regards to gender?
Expectations put upon individuals and roles they take up based on their gender.
ex. women and caregiving, men and breadwinning.
What is gender segregation?
The separation of men and women based off of their gender. The public sphere is thought of to be dominated by men, while women own the private.
Though not all cultures with a gender binary participate in gender segregation!
Define heteronormativity.
The subconscious bias towards normative” sexual and family choices.
Basically assuming everyones straight
What is the sexual division of labour?
Division of labour based off biological sex.
Ex. women tending the house, men “going to work”
What is matrifocal?
Groups of related females (e.g. mother-her sisters-their offspring) form the core of the family and constitute the family’s most central and enduring social and emotional ties.
What is cisgender?
When someone’s sex assigned at birth corresponds to their gender identity.
What is the concept of a family wage?
A wage sufficient to support a family and a non working wife. Allows for gender pay gaps as possibly the women’s income would not seem sufficient? and its just extra money?
