AOBRD
Automatic on board recording device.
Predecessor to the ELD.
BOL
Bill of Lading
A document with contents of load
Cab Card
Carried by drivers, shows police officers how to use the ELD
Citation/Ticket
A fine or warning given if there is an issue with the logs
Co-Driver
Two drivers will form “team drivers”, meaning they drive thesame truck together, switching back and forth between the role of driver and passenger
CDL
Commercial Drivers License. Drivers who hold this license are referred to as CDL drivers
Crossdock
A warehouse used for short-term storage and rearrangement of loads
CSA scores
Compliance, Safety, Accountability scores
DOT audit
Department of Transportation.
In DOT audit a fleet must provide the auditor with the last 6 months of logs for all their drivers and the last 90 days of Inspection Reports
DOT Number
This is a unique number given to each Motor Carrier by the government
Drayage
Drayage refers to the transport of cargo over a short distance, or as part of alonger distance
Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR)
The driver walks around the truck and notes ifthere are any defects on the vehicle. These defects (or no defects) need to bementioned in a daily trip at the beginning or end of the day.
ELD Mandate
Congressional mandate for all Interstate drivers to use ELDs to tracktheir hours of service
Electronic Logging Device
Electronic Logs, E-Logs, Electronic On-BoardRecorder (EOBR)
This is analternative to paper logs. These sync with the truck and automatically change a driver’s duty status to driving when the driver begins to drive
FMCSA
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (an arm of the US government)
Hours of service violation
An HOS violation is when the driver drove when heor she was not allowed to.
International Fuel Tax Agreement
IFTA is a quarterly tax that each motorcarrier has to file. State-by-state mileage; miles per state; jurisdiction report
Live unload
the freight will be removed from the truck/container (alternative is drop &hook)
Lumper
3rd party guy helps load/unload, usually paid hourly
Motor Carrier
Any fleet registered with the FMCSA
Owner Operator
An Owner-Operator, also known as an Independent driver, is a driver that works for a fleet, but owns his or her own vehicle
Personal conveyance
If the driver is driving to their house
Roadside Inspection
Drivers are asked by roadside inspectors to procure their last 8 days of logs and inspection reports
RODS
Record of Duty Status
Sleeper Berth
When the driver is spending time in the trucks living quarters.
Slip Seating
Slip seating is when multiple drivers operate the same vehicle in the sameday.
SMS
Safety Measurement System. Used by FMCSA to identify high-risk carriers anddrivers. Is used as an input to a CSA score.
Terminal
The home base for a fleet of trucks
150 Mile Air Radius
Travel beyond a 150-mile radius from their terminal must track their Hours of Service logs. If they do not travel beyond this, they are referred to as local drivers and do not need to.
OTR
Over the Road. Referring to truck drivers hauling freight over long distances.
