Q

What factors affect the location of a primary industry?

4

A
  • Must be near raw materials- especially if they’re heavy
  • Must be near transport links to move heavy raw materials to factories
  • May want to be near secondary industry
  • Things like farming relies on climate

Q

Why are there mainly quaternary and tertiary industries in MEDCs?

A

People have more free time and are wealthier so more tourism and need people to look after wealth

So increasing demand in services like education and health care and leisure services

Mechanisation means less people need to work on farms etc

They have money to invest in high tech and have skilled/ educated people to use it

Q

What is the quaternary industry?

A

Involves research and development.

Uses high technology and an educated/ skilled workforce to discover/ improve a product.

Make advanced products which require a lot of money

Q

What is the employment structure like in an LEDC?

A

Most people work in primary industry- mainly farming/fishing because mainly subsistence farmers

Fewer people working in manufacturing because country doesn’t have enough money to invest in machinery

Hardly any quaternary because they do not have skilled/ educated workforce or money to invest in high tech

Q

Why is secondary industry declining in MEDCs?

A
  • Cheaper (labour, tax ) to have factories abroad
  • Automation of processes using robots
  • Globalisation

Q

What are the stages of development of a country?

A
  1. Traditional society - tribal in least developed countries eg. Angola, Malawi
  2. Preconditions for take off- LEDC
  3. Take off- NIC
  4. Drive to maturity- NIC
  5. High mass consumption- MEDC

12
Q

What affects the location of secondary industry?

6

A
  • Large flat land so that factories can be built to hold large amounts of products
  • Near other factories - agglomeration - to share expertise
  • Government incentives for cheaper tax or rent
  • Should be near market so can be sold and raw materials as transport is expensive
  • Near good supply of labour
  • Near ports for transport or disposal of large volumes of waste

Q

What is different about factors affecting location of footloose industries?
(4)

A

It is different to heavy industry because it doesn’t matter as much where it is because the products are smaller lighter

  • Near airports as product is less heavy
  • Near other companies to share methods
  • More skilled workforce require: high tech equipment
  • Government incentives

Q

What affects location of tertiary industry?

A
  • Near market- lots of people
  • Large workforce available - educated
  • Capital cities because then people know where they are so more investment = can expand
  • Near other companies to share information

16
Q

Why is the location of industry changing?

A
  • Cheaper labour elsewhere
  • Climate change allows different crops to be grown
  • Exhaustion of raw materials
  • Changing energy sources mean factories no longer need to stay near coal fields but can use the National Grid
  • Governments encourage location to change to places of high unemployment
  • Transport infrastructure opens up remote locations for industry
17
Q

What are the causes of globalisation?

A
  • Free Trade: certain countries make certain good better
  • Satellite communication and Internet allow to keep in touch and control businesses from elsewhere and do advertisement
  • Transportation eg. airplane travelling further for cheaper
  • New international Division of Labour- cheaper to have factories in LEDCs
18
Q

What is the Global Shift?

A

Movement of industry from MEDC to LEDC- outsourcing

19
Q

How do MNCs increase globalisation?

A

They connect different countries and bring their culture to many other countries

20
Q

Why do MNCs locate in LEDCs?

A
  • Cheaper labour
  • Less strict regulations so cheaper
  • People work for longer so quicker production
21
Q

What are the benefits of MNCs on the host?

A
  • Provides jobs—-> skills acquired—-> more jobs
  • Provides higher paying jobs
  • Improves infrastructure eg. transport
  • Pays taxes to government who use it to improve infrastructure
22
Q

What are the negative effects of MNCs on the host country?

A
  • Workers exploited (long hours in poor condition with lower wages than in MEDC) and they live in fear and danger
  • Lots of waste produced which causes lung disease etc and reduces development
  • Jobs not secure- MNC can relocate any time
  • Spread of western culture
  • Influences political decisions
23
Q

How does industry have a negative effect on the environment?

A
  • Quarries make the place look unattractive and attract lots of lorries and cause a lot of traffic and noise/ dust pollution
  • It reduces biodiversity of place eg. overfishing
  • Deforestation
  • Mining contaminates water supplies
  • Air pollution —-> acid rain—–> corrodes buildings
  • Global warming as lots of fossil fuels burnt
