What are the causes of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005?
- 27 degC ocean temperature
- 60m depth
- More than 5 deg North of equator so Coriolis Effect is strong enough to turn the hurricane
- Levees and walls not built properly around the Mississippi so it flooded
What are the effects of Hurricane Katrina?
- Levees broke in 57 areas leading to flooding in city and people drowning
- 1800+ people died
- 8.2m storm surge
- 3mil people affected by power cut
- Looting- black people- racial problems7
- $81bil damage
How was hurricane Katrina managed?
-National Hurricane Centre used satellites to forecast its path and issued two warning signs accordingly to the people.
Evacuation was issued but some people were left behind- poor black people- and some refused to leave.
-$63 billion given by Congress to help people in need
-India gave 25 tonnes of supplies- hygiene kits and blankets

- Access to beach restricted by hard engineering
What are the causes of Boscastle flood?
Hurricane Alex saturated the ground
Catchment 23 km and steep sides so no time for infiltration
River Jordan joins with Valency just above Boscastle so more water volume in river
What impacts did Boscastle flood have?
100 people trapped in homes and needed helicopter rescue- trauma
Put tourism season to stop which accounted for 90% of economy…e.g. Witchcraft Museum
50 cars washed away into harbour and fuel washed into sea

Widening and deepening river channel to increase max capacity….
…but this puts problem downstream….and needs to be maintained regularly
Car park raised to be above flood level so cars won’t wash up
