Handcuffing purpose
To restrain free movement; Assure you use minimum level of force to protect yourself and others from injury.
Handcuff if offender:
- has been violent and uncooperative
- may attempt to escape
- may endanger your safety or safety of others

Accessing Handcuffs - how and where they should be when reaching for handcuffs
- in pouch
- on weapon side in front of weapon
- locks on opposite sides
- single bars towards your pocket, double bars towards zipper and linking chain on top
Used when suspect isn’t drunk and is compliant and doesn’t appear to be dangerous or violent
Standing search
Used when there is a considerable size difference; and if there is a chance suspect will become aggressive or violent
Kneeling search
Used when suspect is aggressive or intoxicated. Also ideal for multiple apprehensions.
Prone search
Used prior to placing person into confinement; performed by corrections, not us.
Complete (strip) search
