Steps when challenging individuals on foot:
A
- Contact dispatch before challenge.
- Ready carry
- Reactionary gap
- Ask for location of ID, have them place on ground outside of foot.
- Have suspect walk 6 paces forward
- Pick up and check credentials.
- Ask reason for being in area
- Command
- Supervisor
- Work phone #
- Picture ID

Steps in challenging individuals in vehicles:
A
- Detect
- Advise dispatch of vehicle description
- use your vehicle for cover and concealment
- ready carry
- at night, tell driver to leave headlights on and turn on dome light.
- hands where you can see them
- have driver open door from outside, push door open with left foot, and step out of vehicle.
- have suspect remove ID and place it on arm rest of vehicle
- suspect will then side step left and walk forward
- other occupant(s) will exit from same door as driver
- Do not leave your cover until all suspects are in final challenge position, then move up.
- 80% focus on suspect, 20% on vehicle.

Felony Stops
A
- BOLO = be on the lookout
- Distance between suspects vehicle and patrol vehicle is 30 feet.
- Vehicle 1 positioned 2-3 feet offset to left of suspect vehicle.
- SFO 1 will establish contact. ID yourself and reason for stop.
- Don’t remove suspect(s) until backup arrives
- Weapon out, safety off, finger on trigger
- SFO 2 observes vehicle and suspects
- SFO 3 and 4 provide cover.
