Indirect-Acting Cholinergic Agonists Flashcards
What is the function of indirect-acting cholinergic agonists?
It is a cholinesterase inhibitor drug that binds with cholinesterase, allowing acetylcholine to activate the muscarinic and nicotinic cholinergic receptors
By inhibiting cholinesterase, what exactly happens?
This action permits skeletal muscle stimulation, which increases the force of muscular contraction.
How are cholinesterase inhibitors helpful? To whom?
They are useful in increasing muscle tone for clients with myasthenia gravis
Besides increasing muscle contractility, what else can cholinesterase inhibitors stimulate?
Increase GI motility, bradycardia, miosis, bronchial constriction, and increased micturition (increased urination).
Other than myasthenia gravis, what other health problems do indirect-acting cholinergic agonists treat?
Glaucoma, Alzehimer’s disease, and muscarinic antagonist poisoning
There are two types of indirect-acthing cholinesterase inhibitors, what are they?
Reversible and irreversitble cholinesterase inhibitors
