What are the three distinct groups of Indigenous peoples?
First Nations, Metis, and inuit
What are some characteristics of Inuit families?
-Family structures are fluid and adaptable often extending beyond the nuclear unit
-Adoption is widespread and viewed as a way to strengthen community bonds
-Historical policies, such as relocation, the imposition of surnames, and the use of “Eskimo tags”, have disrupted tranditional Inuit family systems and cultural practices
What is a personal perspective?
-Social relationships: This emcompasses the network of relationshups that individuals consider familial, which may extend beyond blood ties to include clan members, community members, or chosen kin
Langauge: Do not have a term for family
Childrearing customs: Practices related to raising children
Location of residence: fluidity in residence
What is institutional perspective?
focuses on the political and economic structures that shape family life. It considers how institutions, such as the government, legal systems, and social welfare programs, define, regulate, and impact families
enumeration: Counting and classifying families based on specific criteria
temporal change: How families have changed over time in repsonse to broader societal shifts
What is project surname?
an initiative launched by the Canadian government in 1969, aimed to replace the disk number identification system used for Inuit people with surnames
