Independent ANOVA Flashcards
Why do we run ANOVAs?
-With each t test there is a 5% chance of saying there is a difference when there really isn’t a difference (p = .050)
Type 1 error: Falsely rejecting the null hypothesis
Familywise error: Inflating chance of finding something
What is experimental variance?
Due to experimental manipulation Variability between conditions
-Lots of difference between conditions
What is random variance?
- Due to measurement error Due to individual differences Due to unmeasured variables Variability within conditions -Lots of difference within conditions
Planned comaparison - deviation
Compares the effect of each condition (except the first– defined as “reference”) to the overall condition
2 vs 1234
3 vs 1234
4 vs 1234
Planned comparison - simple
Compares the effect of each condition to the control (defined as “reference” and “first”) condition
1 vs 2
1 vs 3
1 vs 4
Planned comparison - difference
Compares the effect of each condition to the overall effect of all previous conditions
4 vs 321
3 vs 21
2 vs 1
Planned comparison - helmert
Compares the effect of each condition to the overall effect of all following conditions
1 vs 234
2 vs 34
3 vs 4
Planned comparison - repeated
Compares the effect of each condition to the next condition
1 vs 2
2 vs 3
3 vs 4
