What is your understanding of equality and diversity?

A
  • society as a canal lock
  • equality: everyone has the same opportunities in life
  • diversity: viewing people’s differences in a positive way
  • prejudice: judgement not based on fact
  • discrimination: direct/indirect/associative/harassment/victimisation
  • inclusion brings a sense of belonging, access and social interaction
  • tools:
    employee netoworks/forums;
    monitoring demographics;
    equality and diversity incorporated into job descriptions;
    voluntary work schemes

What is your understanding of the Equality Act 2010?

A
  • provides a legal framework to protect rights of individuals and advance equality of opportunity for all
  • 9 protected characteristics inc race, sex, sexuality
  • duty to make reasonable adjustments if someone placed at a substantial disadvantage due to a disability
    i.e. procedure, physical feature of premises (not structural), auxiliary aid/service
  • duty applies to controller of premises (LL/agent)
  • disability: a physical or mental impairment with substantial and long-term adverse effect on ability to carry out day to day activities

A

3 aims:
- eliminate unlawful discrimination
- advance equality of opportunity between people with a protected characteristic and not
- foster good relations between them

  • purpose to integrate consideration of equality and good relations into design of policies and delivery of services inc internal policies
