What is your understanding of equality and diversity?
A
- society as a canal lock
- equality: everyone has the same opportunities in life
- diversity: viewing people’s differences in a positive way
- prejudice: judgement not based on fact
- discrimination: direct/indirect/associative/harassment/victimisation
- inclusion brings a sense of belonging, access and social interaction
- tools:
employee netoworks/forums;
monitoring demographics;
equality and diversity incorporated into job descriptions;
voluntary work schemes

What is your understanding of the Equality Act 2010?
A
- provides a legal framework to protect rights of individuals and advance equality of opportunity for all
- 9 protected characteristics inc race, sex, sexuality
- duty to make reasonable adjustments if someone placed at a substantial disadvantage due to a disability
i.e. procedure, physical feature of premises (not structural), auxiliary aid/service - duty applies to controller of premises (LL/agent)
- disability: a physical or mental impairment with substantial and long-term adverse effect on ability to carry out day to day activities

What is the public sector equality duty?
A
3 aims:
- eliminate unlawful discrimination
- advance equality of opportunity between people with a protected characteristic and not
- foster good relations between them
- purpose to integrate consideration of equality and good relations into design of policies and delivery of services inc internal policies

What is your understanding about inclusive design?
A
- places that work for everyone
- abides by regs Equality Act 2010
and Building Regs M (access to and use of buildings) - designing places that meet needs of diversity of people
- result of inclusive planning, design and management
- tackles social disadvantage
and spatial/social/economic polarisation and exclusion - engagement not just consultation
