In Search Of Better Health 2 Flashcards
distinguish between infectious and non-infectious disease
INFECTIOUS
- infectious disease: occurs where there is an infection.
- invasion of the body by disease
- can be macro or micro organisms
- typically bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoans for Micro
- parasites, fleas, ticks and various types of worms for macro
- infectious disease maybe contagious or communicable contagious disease which can be passed from one person to another ( measles, mumps, colds)
explain why cleanliness in food, water and personal hygiene practices assist in the control of disease
- contagious disease can be transferred in air, water, food, contact and vectors.
- air: pathagens carried in the air currents.
- enters the body from breathing in coughs and sneezes thus the disease.
-water: water can be breeding ground for pathogens to grow particularly if exposed to sewage or decaying organisms. poor filtering systems
- food: contaminated via poor hygiene and handling, bacteria grow in the warm temps of food.
- coughing or sneezing into hands and then handling food.
- contact: between infected and non infected transfers disease ( genital herpes, Aids). passed via sexual fluid and sex. kissing
- hand touching, sharing water bottles.
distinguish between infectious and non-infectious disease NON-INFECTIOUS
non-infectious : invasion of the bod by a pathogen however is not readily passed onto another organism e.g. tetanus, infected toenail, thrush.
-these infections are typically caused by a malfunction of the organism/metabolism e.g. cancer, diabetes, nutritional disease.
methods to control pathogens being passed on
heat, detergent, water, various chemicals, good hygiene.
identify the conditions under which an organism is described as a pathogen.
if an organism is present but not causing a disease it is called a pathogen.
infectious disease is one caused by a pathogen, such as, micro-organisms, agent such as virus or prions, macro parasites.
