in search of better health 1. Flashcards
discuss the difficulties of defining the terms ‘health’ and ‘disease’
- WHO: state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
- healthy and unhealthy: mental and physical.
use available evidence to analyse the links between gene expression and maintenance and repair of body tissue
Gene expression refers to the transfer of information from a gene to produce a protein or RNA. for example If you cut yourself, the genetic code contained in all your cells is used to form the new tissue to repair the damage from the cut.
outline how the function of genes, mitosis, cell differentiation and specialisation assist in the maintenance of health
- genetic makeup controls all your metabolic activities.
- genes controlled by mitosis, cell differentiation and specialization
- if a gene malfunctions, metabolic activity will not function.
- mitosis replaces and repairs cells thus if mitosis losses control cancers and tumors can occur.
- genetic make up also therefore produces proteins that aid the immune system.
what is inherited disease
where the genetic make up is faulty in the genome of the individual, eg Down syndrome
what is infectious disease
where the disease is caused by a pathogen
what are environmental diseases.
where a structure/ metabolism is not working due to something in a persons environment. Eg lead poisoning
